MP3 · WAV · M4A · AAC · FLAC · OGG · MP4 · MOV · WebM
Supports MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, MP4, MOV, and WebM.
Your files never leave your device. Transcription runs locally in your browser.
How to convert MP4 to text
You don't need to extract the audio first or install a converter — drop the MP4 in as it is.
- 1
Add your MP4 file
Drag the video onto the page or click Choose file. It's opened locally in your browser, so even a large MP4 starts right away instead of waiting on an upload.
- 2
Choose language and mode
Keep auto-detect or set the spoken language, then pick Fast for a quick transcript or Accurate for a closer one on a desktop computer.
- 3
Review and export
Read through the MP4 transcript as it appears, correct anything that was misheard, then copy it or download TXT, SRT, or VTT.
What happens to your MP4
Only the audio track matters for transcription. Your browser reads the soundtrack out of the MP4, converts it into the form the speech model expects, and transcribes that — the picture is never analyzed and the video is never re-encoded.
All of this runs on your own computer using WebAssembly, with WebGPU acceleration when your browser supports it. The MP4 never leaves your device, which is why there's no upload progress bar and no per-minute charge.
What people transcribe from MP4
MP4 is what phones, screen recorders, and meeting apps save by default, so most video you need a transcript of is already in this format.
Screen recordings
Turn a recorded walkthrough or demo into written steps for documentation or a support article.
Meeting recordings
Video-call recordings are usually saved as MP4. Transcribe them into notes without handing the recording to another service.
Phone videos
Get the words out of a clip you shot on your phone — for captions, a quote, or just a record of what was said.
Course and lecture videos
Convert a lecture or training video you've saved into text you can search and revise from.
Turn an MP4 into subtitles
Because every segment keeps its start and end time, the same run that gives you a transcript also gives you captions. Export SRT for video editors, or VTT for HTML5 players and web video platforms, then load the subtitle file alongside your MP4.
For MOV or WebM files, see video to text. If you only have the audio track, the MP3 to text converter works the same way, and the free video transcript generator handles every supported format in one place.
Getting a better MP4 transcript
Keep videos under an hour
Videos up to about an hour and 2GB transcribe comfortably. Longer ones may still work but can be slow, depending on your device.
Use a desktop browser for long videos
Transcription is limited by your device's memory and processing power. A recent Chrome or Edge on a laptop or desktop handles long MP4s best.
Clear speech beats high resolution
A 4K video transcribes no better than a 480p one. What matters is how clearly the speech was recorded.
Check names and jargon
Speech models guess at unusual names and technical terms. A quick read-through before exporting catches most of them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to convert MP4 to MP3 first?
No. Drop the MP4 in directly — the audio is extracted for you in the browser.
Is my MP4 uploaded?
No. The video is read and transcribed on your own device and never sent to a server.
How large an MP4 can it handle?
Files up to 2GB are supported, and videos up to about an hour transcribe comfortably. Longer videos may still work but will be slower.
Can I get SRT or VTT subtitles from an MP4?
Yes. Export SRT or VTT after transcription and the timestamps will line up with your video.
What if my MP4 has no speech?
Transcription only works on spoken words. A video with only music or sound effects won't produce a useful transcript.
Can it transcribe MP4 videos in other languages?
Yes. More than 30 languages are supported — leave the language on auto-detect or choose it before you start.
Does it work with MOV or WebM?
Yes — MOV and WebM videos are supported the same way.
